Wonderful Volunteers – Dolores Romaniuk

Who are you?

I’m Dolores Romaniuk, mother of Kyle, whose dream of swimming with dolphins was fulfilled in 1989.  We travelled to the Dolphin Research Center in Marathon, in the Florida Keys, where not only Kyle, but his sister, Angie swam with 2 dolphins in the morning.  We returned to the Center in the afternoon where my husband and I had the opportunity to swim with one as well before Kyle and Angie resumed their experience of Kyle’s dream.  The Center was closed to the public on the day we visited and it was as if we had the place to ourselves and with the help of the wonderful staff we learned a lot about dolphins and what the Research Center was all about.  It was a magical day that created a lasting memory for our whole family.

What is your current role with the organization and how did you get involved get involved with The Dream Factory?

I became a volunteer when our son became involved on the Board of The Dream Factory.  He asked if I could volunteer to help with the set-up of the Dream Maker Auction, which I have continued to do and thoroughly enjoy.  Each year it has gotten bigger and better which means The Dream Factory can make the dreams of children with life threatening illnesses a reality for them and their families.

What is your favourite thing about being involved with The Dream Factory?

Helping The Dream Factory gives our whole family a sense of giving back.  Our oldest grandson, Ashton Kollar, held a fund raising birthday party for The Dream Factory a few years ago which started his endeavor to help out as well.  He continued his efforts by asking friends and family to contribute and hopes to bring awareness about The Dream Factory to more of his friends in the future.

What do you like to do when you are not volunteering your time with The Dream Factory?

I enjoy spending time with family and friends.  I like to help with our grandchildren and watch them participate in the activities that bring them happiness.  I have had many hobbies and interests over the years, sewing from the age of about 12 to this day, playing racquet sports, yoga, tai chi, flower arranging and a bit of sculpting and pottery.  I started quilting when Kyle was undergoing treatment.  My first project was a sampler quilt by hand which I finished for our daughter.  I continue to quilt with a group called “The Quilting Bags”.  We like to make quilts as a group and donate them to various charities.

If you could have a dream come true….what would it be?

My dream would be that The Dream Factory did not have to exist, but that is not a reality at present, so in the interim let’s make every Dream come true for every child and their family.
